What's New

Aloha everyone,

We hope  everyone is doing well!  Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 restrictions on tennis play, lack of public courts available to practice, and a recommendation from the Hawaii Pacific Section of the USTA, the Board has made the difficult decision to cancel our July tournament.  Unfortunately, due to the Department of Education restrictions, we will not be able to have drills at Waiakea High School until further notice.  We are hopeful that the EKS and public courts will open soon.  When they do, we are looking into possible singles match play at EKS.  We will keep you posted.  For all those who are interested in match play at EKS once the courts do open, please contact Carl Soares at  If you are already on Carl’s match play email distribution list, you do not need to do anything further.  He will contact you when EKS opens.

Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

Please stay safe and healthy!

Have Fun & Improve Your Game

Tennis uses the language of life. Advantage, service, fault, break, love - the basic elements of tennis are those of everyday existence, because every match is a life in miniature.

About Us

The Hilo Junior Tennis Club teaches juniors how to play the game of tennis.  We'll work with juniors from the beginner stage to advanced players.  We'll teach them the basics of forehand and backhand shots, how to serve, volleying at the net, and game strategy.

And best of all, they get to play!

But, there is more to it than just getting good at hitting a tennis ball with a racket and scoring points.  Tennis is a sport that promotes sportsmanship, etiquette, and conduct. So, our juniors learn the Rules of Tennis which, provide life lessons as well.

The Hilo Junior Tennis Club is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization. We have no paid employees.  We depend on parents to provide the club with leadership and manpower.

If you're interested in signing up your child, please check out the other links on the site.

Hilo Junior Tennis Club accepts all juniors who are interested in learning to play tennis.

Membership  Dues are $50.00 per year for the first child to join the club, then $25.00 per year for each additional child  from your family who wishes to join.

We ask that parents help the club by assisting at drills and volunteering their time at tournaments.  You can also provide leadership to the club by joining our board, or supporting activities run by the board.

New members interested in joining should fill out the Membership Application and mail it along  with your dues payment to:

Drills are what we call practice and instruction sessions.  Generally speaking, our club holds drills on most Sunday afternoons from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.  Please check out the current Drill Schedule link.

Juniors should be prepared with the following items:

  • tennis or court shoes (smooth soled, not knobby like running shoes)
  • tennis racket
  • water
  • sun screen

The format for weekday activities is Match Play.  Match Play includes participants playing match-type games.

Players need to be able to serve, maintain a baseline to baseline rally, and keep score.  If your child is able to do ALL three things, encourage them to participate in Match Play.   Please note that Match Play time is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Tennis Stadium.

The Hilo Junior Tennis Club sponsors tournaments each year to enable all of our club members to play in tournaments and experience competitive play.
